The blue egg from the chicken farm at @oakspringgardenfoundation . Oh, my! These are in all different colors. I was told that the egg color matches the color of hair behind their earlobes with high probability. Wow! I didn’t know that chicken has earlobes. So, I went to check. Yes, as they told me there are something like earlobes on their heads !!

青い卵！なんと美しい、卵のパッケージを開けたら色とりどりの卵が。ため息が出ました。なんでも鶏の耳たぶの裏の毛の色と卵の色が同じ、な確率が結構あるらしいです。鶏に耳たぶがあるとは知りませんでした。ので早速調べに行きました。確かに耳たぶらしい感じのものが…！！

It is a big rose hip! These are like candies on a short trees… I picked the biggest and sweetest fruit…well technically it should not be sweet, but it looked so. I thought this must be one of heirloom secret roses, but soon I learned it is from Japan and China. Oh, I should’ve known… still it was gorgeous though.

なかなか大きなローズヒップで、まるで木にキャンディーが実ってるよう。とりあえず一番大きくて一番甘そうなやつを頂いた。と言っても食べたわけではなく、万が一食べたとしても決して甘くはない…でもみるからに誘われているような甘さが漂っている。これは絶対特別な薔薇に違いないと思うがすぐにハマナスだと判明…言われてみれば確かに…相変わらず節穴だなあと思う。しかし、ため息が出そうなほどキラキラと輝いてました。

Apple trees everywhere in the little oak spring @oakspringgardenfoundation . The apples in the garden were mostly light yellow green with a hint of pink when I arrived here. Four weeks passed, and the apples turned red. I picked this tiny apple (about 2.5 inch diameter) from one of the oldest trees.

オークスプリングではお庭いっぱいに林檎の木が植っています。レジデンスに来たばかりの頃はほとんどのリンゴがまだまだ青くて少しだけピンクがのぞいているくらいだったのに、四週間経った今、すっかり真っ赤に色づきました。この小さな(直径5センチくらい)りんごは園内の最も古い木の一本からいただきました。

Amazing farmer, Natalie. She took time to check the tomato for me in her busy day. I took the photo because the tomato green, blue sky, and her all looked nice together. It is not easily explained. Probably, it was also reflected my happy mood, and it was very photogenic.

素晴らしい才能ある農家のナタリーさん。忙しい朝にわざわざ時間をとってくれて一緒にトマトの様子をチェックしてくれました。トマトの緑と青い空、そして彼女が一体になってあまりにも素敵な光景だったのでつい、パチリ。うまく言えませんが、私の嬉しい気分も重なって非常にフォトジェニックに見えたんです。

What a joyful bean! It is pinky, greenish, velvety!
It took me a long time to pick this one. It was not an easy decision because one looked nice with vivid pink and the other had attractive twisted shape. I walked back and forth checking behind leaves if there were better ones hidden…
Now, I am completely happy with my choice. Do you agree?

なんと可愛らしいお豆さんでしょう。ピンクだったり、みどり色だったり、ベルベットな質感だったり。とりあえず畑を行ったり来たり。葉っぱをめくって良いのが隠れてないかチェックして。なんせ、どれもこれも素敵で、お！なんて良いピンクと思えば、隣のお豆はなかなか渋いツイストをかけたねじれ方で魅惑してくるし。悩みに悩んでこの豆に！我ながら良い選択だったと自負して、眺めてニヤッとする。

This breathtaking little treasure mushroom was brought by a magic person! I mean… here is what happened. I was looking for a small mushroom including my visual diary here @oakspringgardenfoundation the oak spring garden foundation. Casually mentioned about it, and after a few hours, I found someone knocked my studio door with handful these beautiful mushroom! He even had several more in his jacket pocket! Of course, I screamed with joy. Thank you, Greg!!

まるで魔法のようにこのこの上なく可愛いキノコが届きました。と言うのは、、毎回レジデンスで制作するvisual diaryに描く5センチ未満の小さなキノコを探していました。それをオークスプリングのスタッフの方にふわっと伝えたら数時間後に手にいっぱいの小さなキノコを持ってスタジオを訪ねてくる人が！そして、ジャケットのポケットからさらに別のキノコが出てきたりして…ありがとうございます、Gregさん！もちろん嬉しさのあまり叫んだのは想像に容易いかと。

Rosa carolina, native rose in this region.
This looks like delicious candy. Well, I prickled my finger with its thorn, so it is too violent as a piece of sweet. However, while I am in the garden choosing which plant to draw, I will be a kid in a candy store. we will be a good match!

なんだか美味しそうなキャンディみたい、ですが油断してたら棘で指を刺してしまいました。結構強い。飴ちゃんにしては多少凶暴ですが…お庭で次何を描こうかと算段してる私はまるで駄菓子屋で舌なめずりする子供たちのようで、なんだか乙な繋がりだと思って1人ほくそ笑みました。

I dearly love the pokeberry. Actually, we see them in Japan, and it became common weed. I always mean to portray it every summer, and somehow kept missing the chance. It is so nice to catch up with it in their native place. One problem for me is… when I want to say “pokeberry”, it may sound like “pork belly”. I am sorry if i mispronounced you, it is not intentionally…

ヨウシュヤマゴボウはこの上なく興味をそそられる植物、もちろん日本でもお馴染み。毎夏描こうと思いつつ、何故か機会を逃し続けてきたので、彼らの故郷でのんびり成長しているこの草を描けるなんてかなりの幸運。しかしもんだいがひとつあって、英語ではポークベリー(pokeberry)と言うのですが、どうも私の発音だとポークベリー(pork belly)と言っているような気がする。わざとではないけどここは非常に難しいんです、私には。

The easiest mushroom picking in my life…under th

The easiest mushroom picking in my life…under the big tree, several kinds of mushroom were growing. Some got huge, some dried up. I managed to find very nice small ones as my sitter today. I picked the yellow fluffy mushroom, but was wondering if it is poisonous…and did I wash my hand after handing the mushroom.
After I finished with this mushroom, I cut it in half. It was beautiful keen yellow inside. Well, the backside of the cap was also brilliant lemon yellow!

この上なくお気軽なきのこ狩りを体験。大きな木の下に雑草よけのために敷かれたウッドチップから大量のキノコが顔をだしていました。大きくなり過ぎていたり、カラカラになっていたり。気に入った子達を連れ帰ってきて、迷った末に黄色のでっぷりしたキノコを選んで描き出した、は、いいもののこれって毒キノコか、さっきちゃんと手を洗ったかしらと気持ちがざわつきます。
終わってからふたつに割ってみたら綺麗な弾けるような黄色。そうそう、傘の裏も目の覚めるようなレモンイエローだった！

This beautiful heirloom tomato is called “Ethyl Orange”. Oak spring garden farm grows many kinds of heirloom tomatoes, but this is special! There are five kinds of heirloom tomato seeds saved and kept in the family at the garden. Well, I must find out more.

このでっぷりと神々しいオレンジトマトはエチルオレンジ(Ethyl Orange)と言うそうです。オークスプリングガーデンでは農場があって、たくさんのエアルームトマトを育てていますが、これは特別で昔の持ち主から代々受け継がれてきた種だそうです。もう少し詳しく調べないとダメですね。
